Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction estimates Mercedes at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – following the McLaren team were valued at £3.5 billion in a change of ownership structure last September.

Wolff, who owns a 33% stake of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a shareholding approximately 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team principal and chief executive officer should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Structure

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos Group, who each also own a third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We are providing no official statement on the matter. The governance of the team will remain unchanged, and each shareholder are fully committed to continued achievements of the brand in Formula One."

Valuation Increase

The deal would represent a significant increase in worth of Mercedes F1 since Ineos Group bought its share for £208 million in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the growth in market values of Formula 1 outfits recently as a consequence of the increasing appeal of the sport around the world.

This trend was evident with the success of the F1 movie featuring Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and has grossed over $630 million (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports movie to date.

Current Performance

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren Racing, with three races left this season.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 races so far and is fourth in the drivers' championship after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a unprecedented eight consecutive team titles and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
