The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple face the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
